HOW WE MET

April 11, 2016

How Lauren tells it: It was my first day at the Capitol and I was nervous to be the "new girl." I was in the Committee Page room talking with a coworker when Sean walked in with another guy we worked with. I honestly didn't see him come in but he walked over and introduced himself, sat down, and we just started to talk. I think we talked for hours that day. I felt like I'd known him forever. When I got home that day my roommate, Hannah, asked me if I'd met any cute guys at work and I said "I think I met who I am going to marry." She said "yeah right! After one day!?" But I knew, something was different about Sean. At the end of the week we went out for drinks with coworkers and he literally finished a joke I was making from a stand-up comedian and I just remember thinking, he feels like home. He kissed me later that weekend. I panicked and told him on Monday that I wasn't ready for a relationship, he told me he'd wait, and less than a week later we were dating (who was I kidding!?). How Sean tells it: I'll probably get in trouble writing this because I'm sure I will forget something, but let's see what I can do. I was working at the Minnesota State Capitol as a Committee Page (a literal paper pusher). I came back from a committee hearing and noticed this very cute, curly haired young woman that was definitely new. We chatted, and her sass immediately had my attention. At the end of the week, we were cut loose from work early and decided to go hangout out at the bar at Cossetta's with a group of coworkers. We decided to go to a coworker's house that evening, so I asked her if she wanted to just ride with me that evening. To my surprise, she agreed, and the flirting and teasing continued in the car. Later, the flirting turned into hand holding, and ended with a kiss. I was smitten, and the rest is history.

HOW HE ASKED

May 17, 2019

How Lauren tells it: I had just started a new job that week, and while we'd talked about engagement, I definitely didn't think Sean had a ring yet. I was so sure he didn't have a ring I tried to schedule a knee surgery on the day he was planning to propose! (He told me that would be a "bad weekend for us"). We planned a happy hour that week with a few friends at Breckenridge Brewery. We found a table outside and Sean went in to "go the bathroom" while we all got a beer. He came back out and asked me to get up and follow him. I was so confused, I sat there asking "why?" but got up. He started to talk and I could see where it was heading and was thinking "don't pass out, don't pass out!", I just remember crying, kissing him, and then spinning around to see my friends running to me. I was so excited I forgot to do two very key things: say yes, and put the ring on! Once I realized that it was my grandmother's ring, the crying turned to ugly sobbing. It was everything I could have ever wanted and more. How Sean tells it: I had an appointment with a jeweler scheduled because Lauren wasout of town. I called her parents to tell them; lucky for me, I think they like me. But what I didn't expect was Meg offering me her mother's ring, Lauren's dream ring. I managed to secretly get five of her best friends in town and set up "happy hour" for Lauren and I with a few friends. I hid the ring with the out of town girls, and went home to wait (after a lunch with my cousin Todd who allowed me 1 beer to calm my nerves). At the brewery I ran in "to use the bathroom" and came out with the ring behind my back. It took a little convincing to pull Lauren away from the table and her beer, but she decided to follow. I told her when I started work at the MN Capitol that I was looking for a career, but instead found the love of my life. There was laughing and crying, and I lifted her up, spun her around, and some of her friends were running over to us. It couldn't have been any better.
