How We Met

Memorial Day Weekend 2016

Jamie and Selby met at a mutual friend’s lakehouse on Memorial Day Weekend in 2016. After trying to catch each other out over the next few weeks, our match-maker friend, Amanda, gave Selby’s phone number to Jamie while out one night, with strict instructions not to contact her until the next day. They went on their first official date on July 6, and the rest is history!

The Perfect Proposal

May 3, 2020

To preface our engagement story, you must know one crutial detail. Pre-Covid-19, Selby and Jamie were set to go down to NOLA for JazzFest. On May 3rd, they were supposed to see John Prine in concert, where together they were excited to hear their song “In Spite Of Ourselves” live. On April 7th, John Prine passed away after a tragic battle with Covid-19. Devestated by this news, Jamie told Selby of his would-be plan to propose to her at this concert—now starting from square one, he was adamant about having no any-time-soon proposal plans. — Jamie, the avid golfer, convinced Selby, the renewed golfer, and non-morning person, to get up on the last day in her 20s at 7:25am to go play a round of golf with one of his buddies, Grayson. Selby, thinking she was finally good enough to play with the boys, agreed. That morning—Selby with a strong will to get back in bed—they left for Burns Park in North Little Rock. While crossing the Arkansas River, Selby turned to Jamie and sleepily said, “I’m never doing this again!” Jamie tried his best to pump Selby up for a decent round. After a rough first hole, and as Selby began to wake up, her game, and attitude, improved. On the 12th hole, Grasyon asked Jamie how he was doing. “I’m pretty nervous, I think I might throw up,” Jamie replied. Grayson, in on it, said, “Yeah, I’m pretty nervous, too. I mean, its only the most important day of your life!” On the 18th hole, Jamie and Grayson both finished their putts; Selby was the last to finish. Jamie played “In Spite of Ourselves” on the speaker, and Selby, remembering they were supposed to be in NOLA, said, “you did that on purpose!” Selby finished her put, and when she turned around to go back to the cart, Jamie was there, getting down on one knee!! “Selby, I love you—“ “SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!!” (in so many words) Neither of them remember what was said, other than making sure that Selby officially said yes and that it was Jamie’s job to put the ring on her still golf-gloved finger!
