The antebellum history of the South and Spring Haven Mansion prompted us to do our own research of the property. We learned that in 1800, the cabin was built by James Sanders. His daughter would later go on to marry Dr. Wagon and build the mansion. Dr. Wagon was President Andrew Jackson’s physician who also frequented the mansion. The mansion is a part of the TN Civil War Trail and a plaque at the front of the driveway briefly details its ties to the war. Our historical research of the home did not uncover records of slaves inhabiting Spring Haven’s grounds. We learned that during the Civil War, the home served as a refuge and hospital for Union soldiers. Tours of the home will be available during cocktail hour and the property is open for guests to explore. As an interracial couple, we find it important to be transparent about all facets of the property’s history. Our love and marriage reflect the progress our society has made. We also acknowledge the work that needs to be done.
