A handfasting ceremony has its roots in ancient Celtic tradition, symbolizing the binding together of two people (and the origin of the phrase "tying the knot!"). It symbolizes the notion of the couple binding their lives together and the union of their hopes and desires. The couple will join hands, which symbolizes their free will to enter into the marriage and have them bound together.
Love locks are a symbol of love and commitment where lovers lock a padlock on a chain or gate and then throw away the key, symbolically locking their love forever. Colleen and Sean had a padlock engraved with their names and wedding date and locked it on Helsinki’s Bridge of Love in Finland. There are many bridges of love around the world, but Finland is the only place that has passed an ordinance that these locks will never be removed.
