The Proposal

Macy and I started dating in 2022. It wasn't long before I knew that she was the girl I wanted to marry. I even remember asking my friends only 3 months into the relationship if it was too soon to be thinking of marriage. Luckily for me, Macy and I were on the same page and felt ready to get engaged. One of my favorite stories of Macy is when we got engaged in November of 2023 and how nearly impossible it is to keep a surprise from her. For those who don’t know Macy, she loves a good surprise. As long as it doesn’t scare her, she loves that feeling of experiencing something completely unexpected. There was no doubt in my mind that I would surprise-propose to her. Unfortunately for me, Macy is also an incredibly curious person. She’ll ask questions about anything and everything that comes to mind: “What was one good thing that happened to you at work?” “What did you eat for lunch today?” “What do you think aliens look like?” “How does gravity work?” “Don’t you think it’s crazy that we’re on the side of the world and we don’t fall off?” I appreciate the fact that she thinks I know the laws of the universe, but it makes it hard to keep any secret. The fake story to get all our family together in Palm Desert where I planned to propose was simple. We’re celebrating both of our dad’s October belated birthdays with a weekend getaway and a pretend reservation at a steakhouse. The dad’s pretended to go for a round of golf and accidentally “lost” the range finder at a tee box. Macy and I would have to go find it before dinner, and I would propose to her while we overlooked Palm Desert Valley. Simple enough. Except she questioned me and everyone involved throughout the entire trip: “Why don’t you want me wearing this black dress?” “Why’d you pick this steakhouse?” “Why are our dads golfing now… is it even possible to golf only 6 holes?” “Why do we have to find the range finder now?” “Why are you making me walk up this dirt path in high heels?” Despite all her attempts to derail the plans and my family and I desperately coming up with little white lies throughout the trip, I somehow got her to the top of that tee box on hole 6 and proposed without her suspecting a thing. I promised her that I would love her for the rest of my life and will continue to give her surprises for as long as we're together. She'll never have to be curious about that. We can’t wait for you all to celebrate with us on our wedding day! - Sean Ouye
