FAQs

Question

How much are flights and how long is the flight?

Answer

It depends on when you buy your ticket. We advise putting a Google alert for flights to help track the costs. Flights to Panama City, Panama (PTY), in January 2024 cost between $277 and $615, depending on the airline, departure city, and number of stops. There are several options for flying to Panama. You can fly directly or make a few stops to stretch your legs. If you'd like to fly directly, check out Copa Airlines. Be prepared for an 8-hour flight, though. If you want to make a stop, United and American Airlines offer connecting flights.

Question

Cell Phone Coverage?

Answer

Roaming charges vary depending on your home country and carrier. It’s generally more expensive than using a local SIM card. Check with your home provider for specific roaming rates, or consider purchasing a local SIM card to avoid high fees. Buying a local SIM card allows you to enjoy local rates for calls, texts, and data, avoiding high international roaming fees. It ensures you have reliable mobile connectivity throughout your trip, making it easier to navigate, communicate, and share your experiences. A SIM card typically costs between $2 and $5. Data and calling plans vary, but you can expect to spend around $10 to $30 for a decent prepaid plan. SIM cards are readily available at airports, mobile network stores, convenience stores, and authorized resellers across the country. Simply present your passport for registration, and you’ll be ready to enjoy reliable mobile connectivity during your visit.

Question

What's the best way to get around the city?

Answer

Uber is the safest way to get around the city. Taxis are available, but even the locals recommend uber over the typical taxi. If you are staying at The Westin, a shuttle will pick you up from the airport.

Question

What currency does Panama use?

Answer

The official currency of Panama is the balboa (PAB) but it only comes in coins of $1 or less. Panama does not print their own money and instead uses the US dollar as legal tender making it easy to pay in either currency during your trip. You should always carry cash, whether in balboas or US dollars, in case of an emergency when visiting remote towns, regions, or islands. While large urban areas like Panama City will have plenty of ATMs, with businesses, restaurants, and accommodations accepting credit cards like Visa, MasterCard, and American Express, more rural areas or island towns may not accept credit cards or have ATMs.

Question

January 9th - Martyrs Day

Answer

January 9th is Martyrs' Day in Panama, a national holiday commemorating the deaths of Panamanians in 1964. During major holidays in Panama, they do not sell alcohol until 6 pm. If you are staying at a resort, you will be okay. If you are out in the city, then it may be harder to get alcohol served. Quick tip: if you are staying in Casco Viejo, find the "Chino Market" and they will sell you alcohol.
