A sweater brought them together...a baby blue sequined pullover, to be exact. Scott and Olivia met at a church event in San Francisco last November. Their meeting was not by chance. During the year prior, Scott had been traveling to San Francisco on assignment for work. One week, he thought to finally check out the single adult LDS ward there. Prior to attending, he did some research. After stalking the ward FB page, he saw her...Miss Olivia Huish. Love at first (virtual) sight ;) On November 28, 2016, during one of Scott's business trips, he attended the SF YSA FHE (lots of acronyms there). At the end of the activity, he worked up the courage to talk to Olivia. "I like your sweater", he said. They chatted for a bit, but nothing came from the conversation. The next day, Scott followed up and sent a Facebook message to Olivia asking if she wanted to "get together and talk design." Smooth... (eye roll).
Scott's message suggested the two of them "talk design" while at an exhibit at IDEO. The night of the event, they were both running late (not surprising) and missed the exhibit. However, they salvaged the spoiled plans by getting dinner instead. While at the nearby Delancey's Restaurant, they talked design over mediocre lentil soup. (Fun fact, Olivia had no idea that was a real date, but Scott claims it)
Scott and Olivia each had defining moments when they "knew." While on their third 'real' date, Scott and Olivia met up with friends and ward members for dessert at Ghirardelli Square. The gathering blended a variety of people. Both Olivia and Scott associated with them equally -- the popular, the shy, the cool, and the nerdy. It didn't matter to them. They simply enjoyed being with friends and acquaintances. After leaving the event together, they spent the evening discussing their love for diversity and 'unique' individuals. This love for others has been a common thread of theirs, weaving a tight-knit bond between them. After only four months of dating, they finally verbalized that they "knew" while on a trip to Copenhagen, Denmark. They had traveled over 5,000 miles and spent six straight days together, and surprisingly, they weren't sick of each other! They worked well together as a travel duo, and they couldn't wait to spend more time together. It was there, in that quaint Scandinavian town, that they first talked about marriage. As the months passed, Scott and Liv's relationship hit hyperdrive when Scott moved to San Francisco. It didn't take long to decide to get married. They had become best friends. Additionally, they deeply understood each other, shared similar goals and loved to serve their ward. Being their unconventional selves, Scott and Olivia broke the news to their families and planned the entire wedding BEFORE getting engaged. Their parents had to keep it a secret for over a month while Scott waited for the ring to arrive. Finally, at the end of June, the time came for Scott to make his move...
For her birthday, Scott took Olivia to Kirby Cove (a beautiful overlook of the Golden Gate Bridge and downtown San Francisco) to 'plein air' paint. They hiked to the secluded overlook, carrying two easels, some panoramic canvas, and a watercolor paint set. While setting up, Scott challenged Olivia to a competition -- who could paint the better scene? She readily agreed. There was only one stipulation; they weren't allowed to look at each other's paintings until they were finished. Despite the chilly San Francisco Bay wind, they painted for over an hour. The competition was fierce with paint being spilled on clothes, and trash talk like you've never heard! When they were done, Olivia insisted on seeing Scott's painting first. So, he told her to close her eyes and led her to his painting. After giving her the okay, Olivia looked and gasped... There he was, kneeling on one knee. The painting behind him with the words, "Will you marry me?" "Yes!" she exclaimed. Scott had won Olivia's heart...and the painting competition ;)
