The Surprise Musical Proposal

December 14th, 2018

One winter evening on the upper west side, Jessica was wrapping up one of her Aria Slam events (a group of professional singers she organizes who try out songs in front the group of supportive peers before bringing them into higher-stakes environments), and decided to end the night with her planned duet with Scott, “Tornami a dir,” the final love duet from Don Pasquale. Only, it didn’t quite happen as she had planned. The pianist struck an unfamiliar chord after the first phrase, and Jessica jolted at the mistake...but the pianist persisted in this unexpected direction. Suddenly, Scott broke out into a contemporary English song of his own creation: “Jessica...you’re literally the coolest person I know, and I’m sorry for running off with this duet, but it’s not over yet! You planned this soirée, and the people here love you... So I couldn’t think of a better place to say: I, also, love you. It’s no cliché with you; Each day with you is better than the last, so I better move fast, ‘Cause with you, My future is looking better than my past. The me that’s with you is the best I’m gonna be... So if you want to make me happy...” [Scott leans over to grab a secluded ring box...] “How ‘bout we spend the rest of our life As husband and wife? Jessica, will you marry me?” At which point, a completely flabbergasted Jessica wailed out on a high F: “YEEEEESSS!!!” Scott then revealed the champagne he had covertly brought over to their host’s luxurious apartment earlier that day, and they had a wonderful toast and mini-celebration with their musical friends! Luckily, this was all captured on film by their dear mutual friend Dan Klein (who was a major cause of their meeting in the first place - how perfect!), which they gleefully then shared with family and friends. So if you haven’t seen it yet, let them know - it’s a beautiful and hilarious moment that will live on forever!
