Easter 2023 SCOTT: On Easter, my family visited New Covenant Church, and I saw Jaimie walk into Equipping Hour and sit down across the room from me. I recognized her immediately. She had been my sister, Melanie’s, college roommate. I heard a lot about her over the years from Melanie and knew she was someone special. The next day, when I talked to Melanie, I told her that Jaimie was someone I would be interested in getting to know better. It was something I hoped might happen someday. JAIMIE: I have no recollection of seeing Scott at all on that Easter Sunday. Haha. Spring of 2024 SCOTT: A year later, I was back at New Covenant on Mother’s Day and asked Melanie if I could tag along to Equipping Hour. Mel knew my intentions without me saying anything. I was hoping to see Jaimie. It turned out Jaimie was helping with the teens that morning so, after Equipping Hour, Melanie and I took a walk over toward the teen area. JAIMIE: The first time Scott and I really talked was outside of the teen area on Mother’s Day. He had just returned from a trip to Argentina, and I was working as a Spanish teacher. We talked about our experiences traveling abroad in Spanish speaking countries. That was when I first started to see Scott differently. He wasn’t just someone who was talking to me to be kind. He was a nice guy that I had a shared interest with. He was someone I could maybe see myself going on a date with. SCOTT: I was back again at New Covenant on Father’s Day and was excited to get another opportunity to talk with Jaimie a little. We talked about our summer plans. I don’t think either of us realized just how special that summer would be. Summer of 2024 JAIMIE: In July, Melanie’s family was going to be staying at Covenant Hills Camp for Family Camp and they were insistent that I needed to bring the kids out for a campfire. “Okay! Okay! We’ll come!” When I agreed, I was secretly hoping Scott would be there. Maybe it would be my chance to get him to notice me and maybe ask me out. SCOTT: I was at Melanie's campsite, and she told me that she had invited Jaimie for a campfire. I was excited to see her again. Whatever night she decided to come, I was going to be there. JAIMIE: On Thursday night, the kids and I went out to camp. When Melanie and family met up with us, I immediately noticed that Scott was with them. Woohoo! Melanie had recruited her son to help Scott and I get to know each other. He slyly suggested that we go around the circle answering icebreaker questions. We did that most of the evening. When it was time for me to leave, I thought it was a great opportunity for Scott to offer to walk me to my car. I hoped he would. He didn't. SCOTT: I’m a moron! I should have offered to walk her to her car! I knew right away that I had missed an opportunity. I was kicking myself for it. JAIMIE: The next night, I went back again and spent another evening at camp. Scott and I got more time to talk. Once again, the night was a missed opportunity by Scott. He didn’t ask me out! At this point I wondered if maybe I needed to make the first move, but I convinced myself to be patient. Scott spent most of this second campfire night talking directly to me instead of speaking to the group as a whole. I felt like he finally noticed me and seemed genuinely interested in me. SCOTT: After camp week, I knew I needed to see her again soon and ask her out. I had missed too many opportunities already. I made a plan to attend New Covenant a week later. I waited around upstairs where I knew she would pass by. As I saw her come around the corner my heart was pounding. We talked for a couple minutes and I finally asked her out! She said yes to a date! JAIMIE: He finally asked me out! He finally asked the question, and I answered ‘yes.’ We made plans to meet for dinner at the end of the week. I wasn’t sure what would come of the relationship, but nine months later he once again asked me a question, this time on bended knee, and again I answered, YES!
