How We Met

6.30.2016

Scott and Emily met in a group text message curated by the one and only Chelsea Johnson. In the summer of 2014 Emily biked across the country from Maryland to Oregon as a part of 4K for Cancer, and met one of her best friends Chelsea Johnson. Chelsea grew up with Scott, and became good friends as high school cross country teammates. In June of 2016 Chelsea was house sitting for Scott's parents when she had the idea that Emily and Scott would make a great match. She put them in a group message together and then promptly exited the chat (see the photo on the gallery page). At the time, Scott lived in Salt Lake City and Emily lived in Boston. Emily and Scott started chatting for a few months via Facetime and in October 2016 Scott flew across the country and they met for the first time at the Boston airport. (Emily was so awkward she didn't even get out of the car and told him to put his bags in the back like a taxi driver). They did long distance for a few years until Scott moved to Charleston, WV with Emily in January 2017 as she started her second year of her Physician Assistant program. Two cities, three apartments, and one dog later, they got engaged in October 2022.

The Proposal

10.6.2022

On an unseasonably warm 75 degree fall day on Block Island, Scott got down on one knee and asked Emily to marry him. Block Island, a small island off the coast of Rhode Island, not far from where Emily grew up, had become a special place to them as a destination for many family vacations. Unbeknownst to Emily, Scott had a special surprise for this vacation and had recently gone ring shopping in Charlotte. Scott told Emily his meeting ran late since they were supposed to leave to drive to RI at 2:00pm, when in reality the ring wasn’t ready yet. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. Scott hid the ring in the tire well for the drive up, and safely transported it on the ferry over for the big day. The morning of the proposal Emily got stung by a bee on her left arm. Scott was terrified that her hand would swell up and the ring wouldn’t fit or worse, she would take Benadryl, fall asleep and miss the whole thing. Fortunately, neither happened. Later that afternoon Scott asked Emily if she wanted to take Charlie for a walk down to the beach. Skeptical, because Charlie hates to go on walks, Emily asked “why?” sensing something was happening. Followed by “are you going to wear that?” Scott quickly changed, and a short time after they were walking along Vail Beach, when Scott asked the question and Emily said “YES” without hesitation.
