We met on the second day of classes as freshmen at Virginia Tech. Scott was on his way back from the laundry room in our dorm at Pritchard Hall when he noticed that my door was open and stopped in to introduce himself. During our first conversation, we discovered we had a lot in common, including that he was from Delaware and lived about an hour from where my family has a beach house. During that initial conversation, we also learned that we both were two Hokies who had each grown up watching and cheering for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. A few months later we began dating and the rest is history.
In September of 2018, after asking for Caitlin's parents' blessing and going with them to pick out her engagement ring at her family's jeweler, I began to develop plans for a Christmas proposal. I told Caitlin that we were invited to a holiday office party on December 22. As part of my plan, I had suggested that we go to see the White House and the Capitol Christmas trees on the way to the holiday event. Little did she know, there was more than sightseeing planned at the Capitol Christmas tree. It was there that I got down on one knee and proposed to Caitlin, as both of our families watched from a short distance away. Shortly after, we celebrated our engagement with our families at Old Ebbitt Grill, an iconic restaurant in Washington D.C.
