We met in college at UC Davis. Scott was on his 5th year (aka a super senior), Alexi was a junior transfer. Our two friends (we'll call them Jennifer and Steve for the purpose of this story and to protect their privacy) were dating(ish) at the time and there was a fraternity formal coming up in a few weeks. Jennifer didn't know many of Steve's friends going, so she asked Alexi to go with her and promised to find Alexi a great date. Enter Scott. Alexi met Scott knowing these intentions, but initially, Scott did not, so Steve had to also convince him, as a 5th year who pretty much gave up on fraternity events, to go and to ask Alexi as his date. The rest, as they say, is history!
About a year into the pandemic, Scott and Alexi booked a trip to Aruba. The country had just reopened to tourists and its strict health and safety rules offered comfort and persuasion to the couple to take a tropical vacation for some time away from their congested New York City life. For one of the days, Scott booked a private (and what he thought would be cozy and romantic) sunset snorkel cruise. While waiting on the shore for the boat, the couple noticed that there was no (cozy and romantic) boat in sight. What there was, was an extremely boisterous boat blasting reggaeton pulling up at a nearby shore. Could this be their boat? Surely it can't it.. it was HUGE. And loud. SO LOUD. Turns out, it was. The couple was mortified. Not just because the boat was surely meant for parties of 20-30, but also because the boat company doubled booked and had to ferry a family of 15 to another shore to get on another boat. Words really cannot describe how odd (and awkward) of an experience this was. Anyway, after the couple jetted off at sea and snorkeled around, the sun began to set. Scott and Alexi were sitting at the front of the boat, when Scott slipped away to get some "water." Back he came, on his knees, with the ring. And she said yes!
