This event is on family property that is maintained with a lot of effort! Please respect the property and the greater forest area by not leaving trash anywhere. Large rocks or boulders should not be moved out of place and creeks should not be blocked for any reason. If there is not a fire ban, we will be able to have fires as long as all behave responsibly. It is everyone's responsibility to ensure that fires are not left unattended and that they are fully extinguished.
Weather on the mountain around this time is typically warm during the day, in the 70s, but cold at night, in the high 30s. Even if it doesn't feel too warm, the sun is very strong at this altitude. Sunscreen is a must if you plan to explore outside or join us on any hikes. Hats are also great! June is occasionally rainy as well! Rainboots are surprisingly useful around the land as they protect from water, tall grass, and rocks as you move about -- and they are easy to take on and off! To manage the warmer days and cooler nights, we recommend bringing items that are easy to layer. Our ceremony will be outdoors in the early evening as the sun will not set until close to 8PM. Please plan accordingly in case it gets cold!
Yes! You will mostly see deer in the area so be sure to stay alert when driving. Other common animals include skunks and raccoons. Bears and mountain lions are also found on the mountain. While not frequently sighted, it is recommended not to keep food in your car and to walk with a group at night. Stay away from baby bears as the mama bears are close by. Unfortunately, there are mosquitos on the mountain in the summer time. If sensitive to mosquitos and other insects, please make sure to bring repellant.
STAY HYDRATED! Durango is located at 6,500 ft elevation, while Vallecito is at 8,000 ft elevation. Staying hydrated will help you avoid altitude sickness, but please bring any medication that you might need, worst case scenario. And finally, if consuming any alcohol THE ALTITUDE WILL CAUSE YOU TO BECOME INTOXICATED MORE QUICKLY THAN NORMAL! Please keep this in mind as you enjoy your weekend. :)
