How We Met? (Alexandria's Perspective)

Never in my life did I think that my Econ 3B virtual office hours would change my life forever.

It all began with my accounting TA interview. I had chosen the last interview slot for the accounting TA position, and when I got to the interview at North Hall, I was super nervous. I started talking to another guy who was waiting for his friend who was currently in the interview. When the interviewers finally came out and called my name, I scurried past the guy who was in the interview and who also apparently told me "Good Luck" as I walked into the interview room. 5 days later, COVID caused the world to go into a complete shutdown, so all classes, including office hours, were virtual for Spring quarter 2020. The good news though was that the guy who I scurried past (Dylan) and I both got the TA position and better yet, were assigned to teach the very same class. Fast forward to the middle of spring quarter, no students had shown up to my virtual office hours. Out of nowhere, this random guy showed up into my office hours and started talking to me as if he knew who I was. He asked me about my classes and my summer plans, and I later figured out that it was the TA I didn’t know (Dylan). We ended up talking for half hour until an actual student came in who needed help. When he left, my sister Natalie, who was sitting in the same room as me, asked who I was talking to, and I had casually said “Just another TA”. Natalie ended up saying, “You know he was totally flirting with you, right?” Fast forward again to my last day of office hours, and Dylan had joined again. This time, our conversation stretched two hours past the scheduled time, and we both realized there was definitely something there. Soon after, Dylan made the drive from Orange County to San Diego just to see me — and the rest is history!

How We Met? (Dylan's Perspective)

I was a junior at UCSB and just had my interview for an accounting teaching assistant job. I was walking out when I saw one of my good friends Bailey talking with this girl I didn’t know. I thought she was cute, so as I was walking out of the interview I said, "Good luck on your interview" as she walked in. I was walking away with Bailey and asked who she was. He replied with “You thought she was cute didn’t you”. The girl and I both ended up getting the job (and so did Bailey). I didn’t know her name initially but looked at the interview scheduling list and saw it was Alexandria White. We ended up teaching the same class, Econ 3B, but COVID hit so teaching all went online. One day in the middle of the quarter, I was relaxing in my room when I decided to look at the TA office hour times and just at that moment, I noticed it was one Alexandria’s office hour times. I decided what the hell, I’ll just go in the zoom meeting and see what happens. We ended up having a good conversation but it was short (only 15 minutes). I decided the last week of the quarter to try and go back in her office hours where we ended up spending the most fun 2 hours I’ve ever had on a zoom meeting. At one point, we were laughing as we were drawing a map of California to see how far apart we lived. I ended up asking her for her Snapchat where she eventually gave it to me after teasing me for a bit. Shortly into summer break, I ended up traveling down to San Diego where she was a great tour guide and the rest is history.
