How We Met

October 2012

My college roommate, Anna Wolken (Dorn), and I had been living together in our new apartment for a few weeks when she told me that this boy she knew from high school wanted to know if he could have my phone number. I remember saying "Sure, let's mess with him!" We met for the first time on a Friday night after Schuyler convinced Anna and I to come to Odell to hang out. We had so much fun - driving around country roads, listening to music and talking. It was Schuyler's adventurous personality and ability to make everyone laugh that sparked my interest. A few weeks later, at a Husker football tailgate he officially asked me to be his girlfriend and now here we are!

The Proposal

May 2019

In February 2019, Schuyler surprised me with tickets to the 2019 Kentucky Derby. We planned a vacation to Nashville, TN and then drove to Louisville, KY the morning of the Derby. It had rained all morning so by the time we got parked and started walking towards Churchill Downs, the humidity was starting to set in. We finally got past security and entered into the grandstand. By this time, I noticed that Schuyler was starting to sweat so I asked if he wanted me to hold his jacket. He said "No, I'm good." Anyone who knows Schuyler knows he can't stand to be hot, but at the time I was so excited I didn't think much of it. Still 1-2 hours before post time, I drug Schuyler over to the paddock so we could get a good spot to see. I was trying to get a good selfie of us with the Twin Spires in the background, but it wasn't working out. I was just about to ask a security guard if he'd mind taking a photo for us when Schuyler found this group of older gals to go ask instead. As the lady began snapping pictures, I noticed that her hands were shaking and the ladies behind her were smiling ear to ear. Before I knew it, in front of about 1,000 people, Schuyler got down on one knee and asked me to marry him! I started bawling, and of course said YES! Horse racing is a staple in my family, so it made this gesture just that much more special. We of course celebrated with mint julep and a cigar!
