History & Things To Do

Winston-Salem, often referred to as "Winston", was originally two towns. Winston founded for Joseph Winston, a Revolutionary War hero, and Salem, formed by Moravian colonists. Richard Joshua Reynolds founded RJR Tobacco Company in Winston-Salem and tobacco still dominates the city today. Winston-Salem is called the "Twin City" for its dual heritage and the "Camel City" as a reference to the tobacco industry. The city is home of Wake Forest University, Salem College, and North Carolina School of the Arts. In 1929, the Reynolds Building, a 314-foot skyscraper, was completed in Winston-Salem as the headquarters of RJR Tobacco Company. The building is well known for being the predecessor and prototype for the Empire State Building, which was built in 1931 in NYC. One last fun fact - Texas Pete hot sauce and products are manufactured in Winston-Salem, the company’s home since it was founded in 1929. We hope you enjoy visiting our hometown!
