The Old Course at St Andrews uses a lottery system (called the Ballot) to give visiting golfers a fair chance to play. Guests can enter the Ballot as a group of 2–4 players up to 48 hours before the day they want to golf. Entries close at 2:00 PM, and results are posted around 4:00 PM the same day. If selected, players simply check in on the day of their tee time and present a valid handicap (max 36). This system makes it possible for non-members and international visitors to enjoy a round on the famous Old Course. For more guaranteed tee times (especially for the Old Course in busy months), many visitors book via authorized St Andrews Links tour operators.
