Our First Date

July 1, 2018

After a month of dating, Savvy says to me, "I'd like you to take me on a date.", which had never crossed my mind. I told her sure thing, and we made plans for our first "official" date. At the time, I was living out of my Aunt's garage since my mom and I were moving houses. I didn't have my typical clothes to wear, and was lacking a wardrobe that was worthy of taking a girl on a date so I borrowed my Uncle's polo t-shirt, put on a pair of work jeans, and said meet me at Dos Coyotes! It was close enough to both of us and barely being an adult yet, I didn't know what an actual restaurant was. Since then, I promise we've had fancier date nights. Anyways, I nervously waited for her at the front of Dos Coyotes and when she arrived, she looked as stunning as usual getting out of her always broken down Fiat. We ordered our food and sat out on the patio to wait. As we waited, we were in conversation when I looked down at my bright blue borrowed shirt and noticed a HUGE coffee stain which covered at least half the shirt. I immediately turned bright red from embarrassment. How could I not notice this before leaving? I mean it was a massive brown stain covering the shirt. Seriously. I can just imagine Savvy getting ready 2 hours in advance, meticulously doing her makeup, debating 3 or 4 different outfits paired with shoes to match. Meanwhile there's me, realizing I don't have a planned outfit 20 minutes before I'm supposed to be there, not noticing the shirt I just borrowed is 2 different colors. I sat there for the remainder of our date apologizing and embarrassed. It didn't matter to her though. She was just glad to be spending time with me. This was a pivotal moment for us because now before I leave the house, without fail, I ask her if my outfit looks stupid or to catch the random stains that come with being an oblivious person.

The Proposal

July 11, 2023

For her birthday she wanted a big trip, an extravaganza. The best birthday to date was the filter she was looking through when trying to plan something. So after brainstorming, we decided a cruise to Alaska is exactly what the doctor ordered. On this cruise we had unlimited alcoholic beverages, planned excursions, and her personal favorite- the all you can eat buffet. This was going to be an amazing trip and we both knew that. Along with that, she dropped subtle hints, asking without asking, if I was going to propose. I knew that it was time, but I didn't want her to have even an inkling that I was going to propose so I told her I wasn't. I told her a long story about how the cost of the trip to Alaska ate up all my money and I just couldn't afford to propose right now but that later in life I would and she believed me. What followed next was me asking a detailed overview of what type of engagement ring she would want, without her realizing I was taking notes of everything she was saying in response. That same day, I sat by the pool with her custom designing her ring to fit what she described all from my phone, and she had no clue. When I had bought it, I was told it would be ready for pick up from the Jeweler one week before the cruise and I had planned to hide the ring at my moms in the meantime. Well everyone knows Murphy's Law right? The jeweler calls me the day before the planned pick up and says the gemstone was broken while in transit and they can get another shipped out and put together within the week. I explained the situation and that I need this for the trip we are about to take. They told me they'll have it ready by Friday (two days before the cruise). I gave them a nervous okay and hung up without realizing that on Friday, Savvy and I had planned to spend the day together for her actual birthday. I was taking her to get her nails done, and I had to think of something to say to get out of it. I texted her best friend Julia and offered to pay for both of their nails if she went with savvy for the afternoon. She said yes of course. Next, I told savvy that this coming Friday I didn't want to go get my nails done and as you can expect, she was pretty upset. She even cried which hurt my soul because she had no clue what I was up to. Friday comes around and she's leaving to get her nails done, sad and upset with me as she walks out the door. I watch her drive off and then it's off to the races for me. I quickly throw on my shoes, pat Sawyer "bye" on the head, and drive to the Jewelers. I get the ring and it's beautiful, exactly in my mind what she wanted. I get out to my car and ugly cry the whole drive home, still shaking from the anxiety of what I'm doing. Fast forward now and we're freshly on the cruise ship. I have the ring hidden in the deepest depths of my luggage. As we get to our room on the ship, I tell her I'll go fetch us drinks from the bar and come back so we can unwind in the room for a bit. What I didn't expect is for her unpack all my luggage while I was gone... I can only muster the words, "Did you see it?", probably ten times over. She repeats she doesn't know what I'm talking about. The only thing left in my bag was the ring hidden in a sock still where I put it. She truly didn't see it. Our first planned excursion was to go sightseeing at the glaciers in Juneau, Alaska and what better place to propose?! I planned a hike for us to take right in front of the waterfall next to the Glaciers where I would propose. Once we got to the site where our hike begins, she goes, "I don't want to hike out there, lets just stay close to the visitor center.". I am in mental shambles yet again and have to think on my feet. I find a great hidden spot away from tourists where it is just me and her with a beautiful view. I point at a melted glacier as I hand her the binoculars and say, "Look at that!", and as she's looking for nothing, I pull out the ring and get down on one knee.
