How It All Began...

Daniel and Savanna met by volunteering at The Village Church Denton's student ministry. Daniel led a middle school boys' group and Savanna led a high school girls' group at the time. Savanna noticed Daniel and had thought he was a really handsome guy with a great beard, but she was always very shy around him. Savanna would often try to find ways to talk to Daniel at youth group events. Thankfully, the group of student ministry leaders would hang out after youth group, and that gave the couple plenty of time to get to know each other. They began hanging out with others, then eventually the two began using Snapchat to communicate, and this led to some texting conversations here and there. After some time had passed, Savanna was invited to Daniel's 21st birthday party on Facebook. Savanna accidentally showed up to Daniel's party about an hour early with a large casserole dish of macaroni and cheese. Even though she was embarrassed, Daniel made her feel welcomed. Savanna noticed that Daniel had seemed to hang around and talk with her more than some of his other friends at the party, but she did not think too much about it at the time. It wasn't until after Savanna had left Daniel's party when she received a personal "thank you" on Snapchat from Daniel. Then, Savanna thought, he might like her back! After this, the couple began to talk more. Savanna had noticed little things Daniel was doing that seemed out of his way- for example finding her on Sundays just to check in and say hi, and introducing her to his family at the Christmas Service at church. A few weeks later, Daniel asked Savanna out. The couple went on their first date in January. Since then, their relationship has grown stronger and deeper in the Lord. Together, the two enjoy spending time together, laughing, watching movies, rock climbing, and being surrounded by good company.

The Proposal

From Savanna's perspective: As a couple, we really love trying new things and going on fun adventures. During the past year, we both took up rock climbing and regularly climb together. One date, while we were at Summit, I had mentioned that the gym was a really special place, so Daniel began his plan to propose... Flash forward to Friday, May 4th. I was sick and had a very rough day at school. That night, we had planned on going on a double date at the rock climbing gym with two of our best friends, Trent and Megan. I texted Daniel that morning to let him know that I wasn't feeling good enough to climb, but Daniel kept coming up with reasons to get me to the gym. As the school day went on, I began to feel worse. I ended up calling Daniel after school in tears, and in loving sympathy, he asked me what I wanted to do. I responded with, "I just want to sleep." So he told me to go home and get rest, but had asked me if I could pick him up from the rock climbing gym because "he left his car at Trent's house". I was confused but just wanted to go home, so I said I would pick him up at 5:30p.m. He had still planned on proposing at the gym, just at a different time. I slept until 5:20 p.m. and straight through 5 missed calls from Daniel and Megan. At this point, I was too late to pick up Daniel, so Daniel, along with Trent, Megan, Evan, and Garrett, ended up coming to me. Trent, Megan, and Garrett picked me up from my house, and encouraged me to quickly get ready and come out with them. They drove me to a small pond in Lantana, where Daniel had been waiting to ask me to marry him. While the proposal went nothing according to plan, we both see God's goodness in it. We see His sovereignty in how our plans can fail but His plans are good. Also, I saw what true love is like, that even in my selfishness and sin, God still pursues my heart, just like Daniel still pursued me even though I wanted nothing to do but sleep.
