Antonin grew up in a quiet village in France, running through the Alps with wild abandon, being chased by angry bulls and setting fields on fire. Every year, his parents drove him around Europe in their Volkswagen van, sharing their love of travel and inspiring him to go on his own adventures later in life. Sarah grew up in the sheltered suburbs of southeast Michigan, dutifully learning piano, violin, taekwondo, and ballet. Every year, her parents stuffed everyone in their Toyota Sienna and beelined it to Virginia to visit family, showing her how important it is to water your roots. In 2015, they both moved to Berlin, Germany to start a new life in a new city, without knowing the other existed. Two years later, their paths crossed at a mutual friend’s birthday party. Antonin, with confidence and wit afforded to him by a couple beers and a wingman, walked up to Sarah and, after chatting for a few minutes, used her own line on her: “By the way, I’m Antonin.” By the end of the night, he had gotten her Instagram. In true French fashion, he turned up the charm when he messaged her the next day. “Hey, I noticed you do a lot of modeling. Maybe you can help me with a photoshoot this weekend?” Sarah saw right through his cheesy line but had to respect the audacity. Their first date was a proper Berliner experience. They met at Tempelhof Field, did his photoshoot (yes, it was real), then went to Sahara to grab some of their infamous Sundanese wraps with peanut sauce. Hours later they were still sitting at the Späti (or bodega) next door, playing jacks with bottle caps and talking about life. Eight years later, Antonin and Sarah have strengthened their relationship over their love for adventure, cozy nights at home with takeout, and the occasional weight-lifting class. In their marriage, they respect and support each other so that they can each continue reaching for kindness, greatness, fulfillment, and that next plane ticket to a new destination.
