No! San Miguel de Allende is not a town for cars, it was designed for walking. It is very difficult to find parking and you will spend more time in traffic than you will enjoying the town. If you still want to rent a car to drive to a from Mexico City, we suggest leaving your car parked at the hotel the entire time.
