We met on a school camping trip to Evangola State Park in New York. Katie at the time hated sleeping bags and had taken a couple blankets on the trip. The second night was cold and very windy, Devon and Katie were sitting next to each other on picnic tables. Katie had a blanket around her shoulders, Devon mentioned he was cold, she took the blanket off her shoulders and draped it over both of their legs.
Katie was visiting Devon in Oklahoma, who had a full time seasonal job with the National Park Service at Chickasaw National Recreation Area. They were on their way to dinner when Devon took an exit off the highway at a scenic overlook in the Arbuckle Mountains. Devon lead Katie over to a clearing on top of the rocks, overlooking the rest of the mountain tops, and he began spouting off geology and rock puns related to their relationship. Finally getting on one knee and asking what rhymes with “gosh darnit” —> garnet, which is the stone in her ring, Devon proposed.
