Sarah and Mark met when she was a barista and he was her regular customer. Sarah liked Mark but assumed he was just a pretty face, with little going on upstairs. But one day, as she was working on her thesis in the coffee shop, Mark asked her what she was working on. Sarah explained, and Mark asked solid follow up questions, hinting he might be somewhat of an intellectual. From there forward, Sarah referred to Mark as her “Starbucks Boyfriend” to all of her coworkers. Intense flirting ensued. They said things like, “Hi, how are you?” and “What’s your name?” Once, Mark was standing by the espresso machine reading the newspaper, so Sarah asked “What are you reading?” And Mark replied, “There was a really bad fire!” So Sarah said, “Oh wow!” And that was the end of the conversation. As we said. Intense. Eventually, Mark hadn’t seen Sarah at the coffee shop in a while. He worried she might have left, started a new job without them ever having had a real conversation. But the day before her birthday—on June 20th of 2018—their worlds’ collided once again. Sarah was discussing politics with an old man, as she was apt to do. Mark interrupted to say hello and soon after leave. But now he had his in. Mark found and added Sarah on Facebook that night, and he messaged her, “How did the politics talk go with the old guy?” A short conversation followed. The next day he said, “Oh it’s your birthday. Happy Birthday!” Eventually, it came to light that Sarah was moving to Quincy and that Mark had grown up in Quincy. Sarah asked Mark to give her suggestions for good places to eat in the city. Mark suggested he show her himself. Remarkable. On their first date, it became clear they had a lot of common interests: politics, philosophy, astrology. Plus, they were both incredibly funny. A strong and lasting connection developed that has brought them joy, laughter, and the cutest baby alive: Ambrose!
