Mackinac Island. Need we say more? This is one of our very favorite places to visit up north! We highly recommend visiting Arch Rock, checking out the Butterfly House, horseback riding down the main road on the island, and of course picking up some famous fudge (we love Joann's and Murdick's!)
If you’re looking for a breathtaking stop during your visit, you can’t skip over Kitch-iti-Kipi or the “Big Spring.” Nicknamed “Mirror of Heaven” by ancient Chippewas, this must-see site reflects its surroundings year-round on crystal-clear waters. Here more than 10,000 gallons of vibrant, aqua-colored water erupt each minute from the fissures in the limestone base 40-feet below. The water maintains a constant 45 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, never freezing during the cold Michigan winters. Looking into the water’s depths, you’ll find ancient tree trunks, fat trout, lime-encrusted branches and clouds of sand. Located in Palms Book State Park 12 miles from Manistique, visitors ride the 200 feet across the spring via a self-propelled observation raft.
Along the 42-mile-long lakeshore between Munising and Grand Marais, approximately 15 miles of mineral-stained, sandstone cliffs tower over Lake Superior. This ancient landscape creates Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore — America’s first national lakeshore (established in 1966). It is one of only four national lakeshores in the country. Here you can take a tour in a glass bottom boat, kayak or canoe along the shore, or just take in the amazing natural beauty that is Michigan! Although we haven't visited yet, this natural attraction is on our Michigan bucket list!
This state park located in Paradise can also be accessed from Newberry and is gorgeous year-round. The gushing Upper Falls, Michigan’s largest waterfall, is about 200 feet across with a nearly 50-foot drop into the Tahquamenon River. Each second you spend at the viewing platform, more than 50,000 gallons of water are flowing right before your eyes. Another must-see on our Michigan bucket list!
