Our first date was scheduled to take place on a warm August Friday in 2013. We had planned to carpool together to have a quick lunch (Derek's choice) date. What was planned for just a short amount of time, ended up taking us late into the night. During our initial talks before we met up, Derek had discovered Sarah's summertime bucket list which, was almost complete except for two things- 1. Visiting a butterfly garden (of which she has a love/obsession with), and 2. Going to a museum. As we were finishing up our lunch way out in Culver city, Derek asked Sarah what her plans were for the rest of the day. To his surprise, she said she had nothing else planned and so we decided to spend the day together. With Derek having already prepared a plan A, B, C.... and all the way to K, we headed off from our lunch to the Museum of Natural History, with its summer Butterfly Pavilion. After securing our tickets for the garden, we walked around the museum, learned more about each other, shared our views on the world, and whether we knew it or not, began to fall with each other. Going into the butterfly garden, Sarah was the one to make the cheesy first move, and as a large Monarch zipped past, in a subtle act of feigned fright she grabbed his hand. After making their way through the pavilion, they stepped out right in front of the rose garden. Without hesitating, the two, almost of the same mind, went forth into the garden and down the rows of beautiful flowers, basking in the sunlight. After getting sufficiently deep (and lost) in the maze of blooming buds, they reached a point of isolation, calm and serene. They shared their first kiss there, and left the garden holding each other with the biggest smiles either of them had ever had.
