Crystal and Sarah met at a women’s recovery retreat in Prescott, Arizona in January 2015. Sarah was asked to be the Al-Anon speaker by their mutual friends. Crystal and Sarah were assigned to the same cabin with four other women. They both remember the group hike because they had the same pace and naturally found themselves walking and talking together. Sarah lived in Costa Mesa, California with her 10 year old son Luke (her daughter Carissa had already moved back to San Francisco) and Crystal lived in Phoenix, Arizona with her best friend Autumn. For the next two solid years, Crystal and Sarah had a long distance love story adventure. Their longest period apart was 5 weeks. They shared a journal during the two years span passing it back and forth after each visit. Their journal(s) are packed with accounts of their many travels & new experiences, sappy love letters, big dreams, lists upon lists of favorites and such, vulnerable and honest sharing. During this time, Sarah came out of the closet with Crystal’s patient support and tender compassion. And Crystal stepped into the role of “Your Mothers partner” with both Carissa and Luke, forming relationships with each of them that proved tricky and difficult in different ways. In July 2018, Crystal proposed in a glorious and surprisingly public way in front of family, friends and many, many strangers at the LA movie premiere of “The Road to Edmond” in which Crystal and Sarah had been “extras” appearing in the movie both as brides in a controversial Christian gay wedding. Shortly after the epic wedding proposal, Crystal and Sarah (and Luke) moved in together in a cute Biltmore neighborhood in Phoenix. This last year has been marked with lots of “new” and “brave” in establishing their own authentic state of “normal.” Crystal and Sarah gratefully acknowledge that there is a huge supporting cast to their love story. Their hope is that their wedding day will also feel a bit like their cast party. Love always wins!
