Question

How should we travel from the USA to Mérida?

Answer

We recommend connecting in or flying direct from a US airport. Houston (United), Miami (American Airlines, VivaAerobus), Dallas (American Airlines), and Orlando (VivaAerobus) all have direct flights to Mérida airport (IATA: MID). If flying from Colorado Springs, you have the option of flying to Merida with one stop in Dallas or Houston, or you can also fly direct to Cancun with Southwest, and then take a train or rent a car (each take about 3.5 hours) to get to Merida. Make sure to check flight schedules as direct flights vary and aren't available every day!

Question

What do we do once we land?

Answer

The airport is small, clean, and easy to navigate. Customs is much easier than in Mexico City and entry forms are done electronically through a QR code when you arrive. Make sure to have your hotel address on hand for the entry process! The Mérida airport doesn't allow Uber to pick up from the airport, only certified taxis. A taxi ride will cost about ~300 pesos ($15) to get to the center of the city. If you're feeling adventurous, you can walk about 10 minutes from the airport to the street (Calle 23), where you'll find taxis who can take you for about 150-200 pesos. They'll approach you as you're walking, offer a rate, and then walk you to their car. We've never had an issue doing this, but use your judgement (and Spanish skills!)

Question

Do we need to rent a car + Yucatan travel methods?

Answer

Uber is affordable and easy to use in Mérida (outside of airport pick-up), so it's probably what we'd recommend. However, renting a car makes for a really cool experience and driving is relatively easy & safe in the Yucatan. It lets you explore the hundreds of nearby cenotes, ecological parks, and beaches without having to use a rideshare service or tour. We've rented through Enterprise and it was around $300 for a week. Booking guided tours and shuttles are also a great way to get around! There's also a new tourist train running in Merida called the Tren Maya, which connects many of the major destinations in the area.

Question

Is there a dress code?

Answer

In general, dress for humid/warm weather! For women: Formal/Semi-Formal, but anything goes. :) Linen or airy clothes/dresses are recommended. For men: Formal/Semi-Formal/Formal Guayabera are recommended, but anything goes. You are welcome to wear what you would to a casual American or European wedding, or you can buy a guayabera and wear it with some linen or light-colored pants to feel like a real Yucateco. The average temp in Merida in February is high of 86F, low of 64F.

Question

Is there a wedding registry?
