The summer after college had just ended for me and all my peers had landed jobs that would jump-start their careers. I searched for hours and hours in hopes of finding my NYC artistic dream job in Houston when I fell upon an ad for a wedding photography studio. I played with the idea of applying for two days and then finally pressed send on the email. That same week of me getting hired, Alan had just started there too. We spent 6 days a week together for the better part of a year, from working in the studio to assisting at weddings. We instantly became quick friends bonding over art and broken hearts. Before we know what good coffee was we would go to Starbucks on our lunch breaks. That winter on our coffee runs, Alan, would play the local jazz station on the radio every morning. He'd mimic the sound of a trumpet so well I couldn't tell if it was him or the radio. As I ate dinner that night with my family I remember telling them all about him and what made him SO COOL. " HE LIKES JAZZ MUSIC AND HE PLAYS DRUMS." Thinking back on this I can see how these words could seem meaningless to some, but to me, it meant I had met someone who was going to understand not only who I was, but where I wanted to go and who I wanted to become. 5 years later he asked me to marry him this past November.
