Outfit Guide

The Wedding Website of Sanigdha Raj and Adithya Sankar
Indian weddings are filled with joy, laughter, colour, that are also reflected in our Indian attire. This guide will help you understand what to wear, especially if you’re new to Indian outfits.

WOMEN

Saree

Saree

A saree is basically the queen of Indian outfits, a long flowing piece of fabric usually five to seven yards that wraps around the body and instantly makes you look elegant and ethereal. It comes with a fitted blouse called a choli and a comfy skirt underneath known as a petticoat, and once you drape that final end over your shoulder you suddenly get main character energy. Sarees come in every colour and fabric imaginable, from soft cotton to dramatic silk, and can be simple, sparkly, embroidered, or totally Bollywood glam. It is the kind of outfit that makes you feel like you are floating, glowing, and maybe even ready for your own slow motion movie

Lehenga

Lehenga

A lehenga is the ultimate twirl-worthy outfit, a long and beautifully decorated skirt that instantly makes you feel like you stepped out of a Bollywood dance scene. It is part of a three-piece look called a lehenga choli, which includes the skirt, a fitted blouse called a choli, and a flowing dupatta that you can drape however you like. Lehengas often come with embroidery, sequins, shimmer and all the fun details that make weddings sparkle, and they sit comfortably at the waist or hips so the midriff peeks through just enough to look stylish and festive. It is the kind of outfit that makes you want to spin around, pose for photos and live your best glamorous life.

Salwar Kameez

Salwar Kameez

A salwar kameez is the comfiest superstar of Indian outfits, a perfect blend of elegance and “I can actually move in this.” It comes with a long tunic called a kameez, loose and breezy trousers known as salwar, and a flowy dupatta that you can toss over your shoulder like a fashion moment. It is stylish without trying too hard, totally beginner friendly, and perfect for anyone who wants to look festive without dealing with complicated drapes or heavy outfits. Whether simple or beautifully embroidered, a salwar kameez always feels effortless, graceful and ready for a good time.

Anarkali

Anarkali

An Anarkali is the drama queen of Indian outfits, a gorgeous long dress with a fitted bodice that flares out into a flowy, princess like silhouette. It is paired with slim churidar pants and a matching dupatta that adds the perfect finishing touch. Anarkalis make you feel like you are gliding with every step, thanks to the beautiful flare that swishes around like a fairytale moment. Whether embellished, embroidered or soft and simple, the Anarkali always gives major royal energy and is perfect for anyone who wants to look graceful, tall and effortlessly stunning.

MEN

Kurta Pyjama

Kurta Pyjama

A kurta pyjama is the ultimate “I look good without even trying” outfit for men, a classic two-piece set made of a comfy knee length tunic called kurta and easy drawstring trousers known as pyjama. It is lightweight, breathable and perfect for everything from chilling at home to showing up at a wedding looking effortlessly stylish. With endless colours and fabrics to choose from, a kurta pyjama can be simple, festive or fully glam, but it always feels comfortable enough to eat, dance and enjoy the celebrations without worrying about tight suits or stiff collars.

Sherwani

Sherwani

A sherwani is the king of men’s festive fashion, a long, regal coat that reaches the knees and instantly makes you look wedding ready. It has a sharp stand-up collar, neat front buttons and a perfectly tailored silhouette that feels elegant without being over the top. Sherwanis are a favourite for big celebrations, especially weddings, because they look polished, luxurious and effortlessly impressive. Whether embroidered, textured or lightly detailed, a sherwani always brings a refined and traditional charm to any special occasion.

Veshti and Kurta

Veshti and Kurta

A veshti is the ultimate South Indian classic, a clean white unstitched cloth wrapped around the lower body that somehow manages to look simple, elegant and grand all at the same time. Paired with a kurta, which is a loose, comfy, collarless shirt, this outfit becomes the perfect blend of traditional charm and effortless style. It is breathable, lightweight and ideal for warm weather celebrations, making it a favourite for daytime events, religious ceremonies and weddings.

✨ When to Wear What

Our wedding celebrations include multiple events such as the Sangeet, Haldi and the Wedding ceremony. To make things easy, we have created this simple, guide to help you look amazing, feel comfortable and enjoy every moment. Please avoid wearing white or black to any of the events as these colours are considered inauspicious at Indian weddings. Since this will be taking place in early summer and temperatures will reach the high 30’s, please dress for warm weather. Sunscreen and sunglasses are absolutely essential, so do not forget those. We also understand that this may be the first Indian wedding for some of you and it can be hard to find time to shop, so we have listed a few online stores where you can easily purchase outfits. Please order as early as you can because shipping may take some time. If you are more comfortable in western clothing that is completely fine, we only ask that you keep things respectful to Indian culture by avoiding mini dresses, miniskirts and low-cut tops.

🎤 Sangeet Night

The Sangeet is all about music, dancing and having fun, so wear something that lets you move, twirl and enjoy the night. For the girls, a light lehenga or something flowy is perfect, because you will definitely be on the dance floor. Since it is a night event, go colourful, sparkly, shiny and bold… think disco energy, think sequins, think vibrant! For the boys, a kurta or something festive and lightweight works great.

🌼 Haldi

Haldi is the ceremony where a turmeric paste is applied to the bride and groom, so expect a little mess and a lot of laughter. This is the only event with a dress code: WE KINDLY ASK OUR GUESTS TO WEAR YELLOW OR ORANGE OR PINK. These colours look beautiful in photos and match the traditional theme. Make sure you wear something that you don’t mind getting a bit stained or splashed —turmeric has a magical way of getting everywhere!

💍 Wedding Ceremony

For the wedding day, we ask our guests to wear traditional attire to honour the cultural significance of the ceremony. Beautiful sarees, lehengas, salwar suits, kurtas, sherwanis, and veshtis are perfect. We kindly request that guests avoid white and black, as these colours are considered inauspicious for Indian weddings. Choose soft, respectful daytime colours and you will blend beautifully into the celebration.
