We highly recommend signing up for alerts for flight deals. Val's favorite website for this is www.airfarewatchdog.com. You can select alerts for deals from your departure city to Lihue, Hawaii (LIH), the only airport on the island. 

You can also get an alert for all flight deals to Kauai, then travel from your home airport to another departure city with a deal. Val used to fly from Denver to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix or Seattle when there were cheap flights from those cities, usually for around $600 round trip.

An exceptional round trip price from Denver to Lihue is $550-$650. From Raleigh, North Carolina, it's around $750.

We recommend fliying Southwest from Denver or Raleigh to connecting flights on Hawaiian (or other). United airlines has a non-stop flight from Denver to Lihue.
