The first summer after we started dating, Patrick and I quickly realized we shared the same love of being out on the water. During the summer months, we would spend most of our free time on his boat, Murphy's Law. Every year we both made sure to take off of work for the fourth of July to be on the boat and watch the fireworks from Northport Bay. That year I was particularly excited because we were planning on having his family on the boat to watch the fireworks together. I went to the store the day before and was up until 2 am preparing food and making drinks. Patrick kept telling me we would not need so much food since his family was going to his uncle's house and would probably eat there, but I was insistent on making everything perfect. We woke up early and went to the parade in Port Jefferson with Captain and then drove out to Northport. We waited for his dad to call and let him know when to pick them up. Wed drove the boat out to Sand City and anchored up. It was getting late and I was getting more and more upset. Finally, his dad called and I could hear his explaining that they couldn't make it. My heart sank. I looked down and the dog squatted and peed all over the place. Patrick was kneeling by the storage compartment of the boat looking for paper towels, I assumed. I started asking a million and one questions: "What was wrong? What had happened? Why weren't they coming?" he responded: "I asked them not to come." I was so upset and frustrated all I could say was "WHY!?" As he pulled out the ring box from the boat compartment, he responded: "Because I wanted to ask you to marry me"
