Travel Note
VISA INTO CHINA Please check online for the latest information on visa requirements into China. If you're unsure, ask us! BEFORE TRAVEL: DOWNLOAD A VPN All your favourite social media apps (including WhatsApp) will be blocked. Make sure you have an active VPN *before* you arrive in China. I recommend LetsVPN (https://letsvpn.world/?hl=en). E-SIMS ARE EASIER I wish someone had told me this awhile back, but if your phone supports e-SIMs, it's way better than having to buy a SIM when you land. We like Airalo (https://www.airalo.com/) but there are plenty of other options. PAYMENT: ALIPAY OR WECHAT You'll find it difficult to spend your cash in China, but you can easily link your credit/debit cards to an Alipay or WeChat account and pay via QR code. TRANSPORATION: DIDI OR TAXIS You can likely hail a taxi off the street, but most people use Didi to get around the city. It's kind of like Uber, except you can pay a little extra to get properly trained drivers and cleaner cars. MAPS As you might've guessed, Google Maps does not work in China. We use AMap or Baidu Maps. TIPPING CULTURE There is none. Don't tip. SAFETY China is very safe, especially in the capital. There are CCTV cameras everywhere. Just don't do anything stupid (e.g. get in a bar fight) and you'll be fine.
