The Jewish Girl

Whole Foods and Self-Deprecation

Many long years ago, Ben was on his way to court when a beautiful ball of anxiety and cheerful energy rushed past him. "I must meet her," he thought to himself. Not one for passivity, he immediately approached her to strike up a conversation about the lighthearted topic of faith and the disdain for faith within the legal community. After a brief conversation, they parted ways. Later he told his best friend about the cute girl he'd assumed was Jewish, and the two proceeded to refer to her as "The Jewish Girl." Sandra would not remember that first conversation. Fast forward a few years, a few more brief conversations, and a few other romantic entanglements and the two found themselves sitting next to each other during a particularly long and slow calendar before the Honorable Judge Sammartino. Entirely oblivious, as usual, to all going on around her, Sandra was completely immersed in a debate with her inner monologue about an upcoming trial, when she was pleasantly brought back to reality by the handsome lawyer with the swooshy hair sitting next to her. This time, the conversation was more than brief and Sandra remembered it fully. Their first date was at Whole Foods, at Ben's suggestion. Before the date, Sandra was not sure if it in fact was a date because, well, Whole Foods. Ben's best friend and his wife gave Ben one vital piece of advice for him before the date, "Be different than you usually are on dates." Sandra was not ready to tell everyone who she was seeing, so instead she told her trial co-counsel, Becky, that she'd met a sexy older man at the dog park, and asked Becky for advice. Becky was succinct, "Older men are hot. Do it." It was the most romantic, exciting, life-changing date either had ever experienced. Sandra spent the whole time warning Ben, "I'm a piece of shit. Don't date me." At the end of the date he walked her to her car where she talked to him for about 195739 hours waiting for him to kiss her. He finally did and it was the best.
