Sam travels down to Chicago for work every once in a while. The summer right after we met he had lived down there for 3 months and I traveled as much as I could to see him. He'd take the train all the way from Chicago to Milwaukee where he'd meet me and ride all the way back; a total of 4 hours on the train, all so I wouldn't have to ride it alone. That train ride was where we caught up on what had happened since we last saw eachother, did bible studies, read, and talked about our plans once we got to the city. The following summer, Sam was again sent down to Chicago for a week. I was lucky enough to have off one weekend when he [again] met me at the train station and rode all the way back with me. We spent the weekend at our favorite restaurants, walking through the parks filled with people, vendors and beautiful gardens. The last night I was there it was a little rainy. We went to the Science Museum where Sam read every "info paragraph" posted on the walls and where we stood in the crowds of children and families watching the scientists explain cool experiments. The day was coming to an end and we had plans to go to one of our favorite restaurants, "The Exchange". It was a little dreary out but the city lights were starting to pop on and it made everything look like it was glowing. We decided to walk through the Lake Shore East Park, the one we walked through so many times the summer before- it was sprinkling out, the sun was setting, and there was no one else in the park. As I was admiring the lights and Sam was apologizing for the light rain, he stopped in his tracks and told me that he in fact had talked to my Grandparents [as well as my parents] about their blessing (on the train-ride down I had asked when he thought he was going to talk to my grandparents since I knew he wanted to and he told me soon haha). I turned around and he was standing there smiling ear to ear, one hand on his umbrella, the other on the box in his pocket. The rest was a blur… but it ended with him on one knee (on the wet sidewalk) and me saying "wait actually"?! We decided not to tell any friends or family that night. We got drinks after dinner where we ONLY told the Bartender and a stranger next to us who bought us a celebratory drink and wished us well before we left to go dancing with some local Chicago friends! The next morning we called our friends and family and enjoyed the train ride back to Milwaukee together once more!
