Sannat, Malta

The wedding will be located in Sannat, Malta. The Maltese islands is a chain of 5 islands with only the largest two inhabited. The main inhabited island is called Malta while the second and smaller island is called Gozo (or Għawdex in Maltese) with the two islands separated by a short ferry ride. Sannat is located on the island of Gozo.

Travel Note

How to get to Gozo

There are no direct flights from the U.S. to Malta. Typical layover connections are major European cities with the most common being Paris, London, Frankfurt, Rome, and Istanbul among others. To get to Gozo, you can: (i) take a 40 minute taxi from the airport to Cirkewwa and then take a 20 minute car ferry that operates on a continuous basis during the summer (the crossing to Gozo is free, you only need to pay going back from Gozo to Malta) or (ii) take a 15 minute taxi from the airport to Valetta and then take a 40 minute passenger ferry that operates on a fixed schedule. Both ferry options leave you in the same harbor in Gozo (the harbor is called Mgarr). If you are renting a car, you will need to take the Cirkewwa ferry. For the Cirkewwa ferry, unless you book transport directly to your stay in Gozo, you will need to take your luggage onto the ferry and get another taxi when you get to Gozo (it should not be difficult to find a taxi in the Gozo harbor from Uber). If you take the Valetta ferry, you will need a taxi to Valetta and another in Gozo. My recommendation if this is your first time to Malta is to take the Cirkewwa for the views. Both options will cost around ten euros

Getting around

For those who prefer to rent a car, in Malta cars are on the left side of the road (thank you British colonialism) and it is often cheaper to rent a manual car than an automatic. Major car rental agencies are available as well as local ones. You can rent from the airport or at the harbor in Gozo (Avis and Hertz). Google maps works well for directions while driving. For those who prefer not to drive, Uber is readily available as well as other local taxi apps such as Bolt and eCabs. Taxi's are available through the day and night. Given Gozo is so small, a typical ride should not cost more then $5-$10. There is a good bus system to get around as well, but in the hot summer months it will not be the most comfortable way of getting around.

Where to stay

Gozo is small so you will not be more than 20 minutes away from anywhere on the island. For simplicity reasons for the day of the wedding, we are recommending guests stay at Hotel Ta' Cenc which is also the wedding venue. To book a room at Ta' Cenc visit the link below: https://www.vjborg.com/ta-cenc/ta-cenc-hotel-spa/ If you choose not to stay at Ta' Cenc, below is a list of additional hotels we recommend staying at on the island: - Kempinski Hotel (located in San Lawrenz - the nicest and most expensive on the island but a bit out of the way), - Cornucopia (Xaghra), - Cesca's Boutique Hotel (Xlendi), - Hotel Calypso (Marsalforn), - Grand Hotel (Ghajnsielem), and - Quaint Boutique Hotels (in Nadur, Xewkjia and Sannat with the latter two close to the wedding venue). Additionally, it's common in Gozo to rent farmhouses. A farmhouse is a building that was once upon a time a house that was... part of a farm. Farmhouses have since been converted into a rustic-modern homes that usually include a pool. This option would be good for a group and can be found on Airbnb, Booking.com, etc. If you are looking to spend some time on the main Island (Malta), we would recommend staying in Valetta for a more historical, charming vibe with plenty of bars and restaurants available at night. Parking and driving could be difficult in Valetta due to the narrow and sometimes steep streets. For a more of a beach vibe, look at Mellieha, a region to the north of the island which includes Golden Bay, Mellieha Bay and L-Armier. Paceville/St. Julians is known as the "Party" area so it can be loud.

For all the days along the way
