From the moment Sam said “yes,” there was never a question as to where they would be married. Their beloved Charleston home: where Sam and Mark attended college; the place they met; where their values were shaped by the unique culture of this special place; the city where they grew into adulthood, forming the foundation of the people they are today. There’s simply no place like Charleston.
Just as there was never a question as to the city, so there wasn’t a doubt about where the marriage would take place. Sam & Mark are blessed to be part of the St. Michael’s community, with whom they maintain a nearly 300-year tradition of worship in this sanctuary. As it has endured a Revolution and a Civil War, they’re confident it will endure another 300 years. An historic site in its own right, it is where George Washington worshipped in pew 43 in 1791 after his stop at Hampton Plantation up the coast. Buried in the churchyard are American Founders Charles Cotesworth Pinckney and John Rutledge, as well as Mark’s college Professor of the Presidency, Thomas Chorlton.
This beautiful historic home on the original Charleston Wharf was built by Revolutionary War hero Christopher Gadsden in 1782. Among the most zealous patriots in favor of American Independence, Gadsden created the famous “Don’t Tread On Me” flag. The iron gates at the back of the home’s courtyard were forged by famous Charleston ironworker Philip Simmons and features a snake crest in honor of its former owner. The unique placement of the home on the property is known locally as the ‘Charleston Single’ style. This tradition originated, and is maintained, to maximize courtyard space so that one may enjoy the beautiful Lowcountry weather all year round.
