In the summer of 2016, Sam felt called for a second summer of driving ski boats and houseboats on the Sacramento Delta for Sonshine Ministries. She also had a job commitment in Phoenix, AZ, which made the decision to surrender her position as a boat driver difficult but necessary. That same summer, Aaron, was scheduled to serve as a cook, what we like to call a “Barney”. Once Sam could no longer drive that summer, the camp director asked if Aaron would fill the spot of this unspoken driver that had to back out last minute. As both their summers went on, Sam flew back to Stockton to guest drive the last 4 weeks of the summer. The two of them were paired up to drive a houseboat together. What was intended to be a practical joke on the two of them (shoutout to the director), turned into a week of the most joyful week of serving they had experienced. After lots of prayer and encouragement to stay focused on the Lord the remainder of their time on the water, the two of them went home at the end of the summer wondering if that girl or guy would want to stay friends. As time passed, they stayed in touch sending letters and getting together whenever she flew to California for family events, eventually leading them to dating. With some hard work, numerous Sunday dinner FaceTime dates, and a whole lot of love, they made a two-year relationship turn into the most rewarding long-distance journey they could’ve ever hoped for.
