Sam and Mason started dating during their junior year of high school in 2016. They had been friends of friends and had a few classes together throughout high school. He texted her one night asking for help with their math homework, and then wouldn't stop texting her. He later divulged that he was just looking for a prom date, but he got a lot more than he bargained for.

Sam and Mason planned to go hiking in Shenandoah National Park before heading home for Thanksgiving. Mason picked a hike with lots of waterfalls. While hiking, they found a waterfall that was off the beaten trail down a steep hill. He insisted on going down the hill to the base of the waterfall because the photos would be worth it. Reluctantly, Sam followed (covered in dirt). At the bottom of the waterfall off the White Oak Canyon Trail, Mason proposed. Sam screamed and almost fell in the river, but enthusiastically said yes!
