Sam and Margo met while working at SMU in 2023. During Margo’s first week, Sam saw her walking up the stairs and knew he wanted to talk to her. After learning her name, he discovered that she had lived in his hometown, Midland, TX, for some time during high school. A mutual friend from Midland tried to set them up on a date, but Margo declined. That fall, one of Sam’s jobs was making sure the call sheet was ready and printed before every football game. Before one game day, his printer broke, so of course Sam went to Margo to see if she could help. For some reason, the file just wouldn’t print double-sided, so the two spent time troubleshooting together. That small moment sparked conversation, and Margo admitted they’d never gone on that date. Sam wasted no time. He set up drinks for the following Thursday at The Rustic. From the start, Margo knew there was something special about Sam, but she was nervous about dating someone who worked in the same office. After their first date, though, SMU won the game that weekend. To keep seeing her despite her hesitation, Sam joked that they had to keep going on Thursday dates, if for nothing else, out of superstition so that SMU would keep winning. Sure enough, they kept up the tradition the rest of the season, and SMU kept winning too. After SMU won the AAC Championship, Margo decided she couldn’t keep dating someone from work and suggested they remain friends. While home in Midland, Sam told his parents about her. His mom turned to his dad and said, “This is the girl he’s going to marry. I’ve never seen him like this.” A couple of months later, Margo saw Sam walk past that printer, and she decided to text him to invite him out to celebrate his promotion. Their connection picked up right where it had left off. At first, they tried to keep things under wraps at work, but it didn’t take long for them to realize they simply make each other better. They have the most fun when they were together, and they stopped worrying about anything else. In May 2025, Sam proposed in front of Dallas Hall on SMU’s campus, right where they had gone on walks countless times during the early days of their relationship. Now, even though Margo has moved to Waco to start law school at Baylor, Sam is still superstitious about Thursday date nights before games. The tradition lives on, sometimes over FaceTime dinners, sometimes meeting halfway, because after all, why mess with a winning streak?
