How we met

October 2017

It was a crisp, sunny weekend in the hills of West Virginia when Kirsten and her friends Maggie and Mike traveled to Canaan Valley for a low key mountain biking, local beer drinking, music filled weekend. The Shook Twins were playing at the Purple Fiddle that Friday night in Thomas, West Virginia and as they walked into the building, Kirsten saw a friend of hers, Ryan, she had met the year before at the Brewskies music festival. (It was at this music festival where Kirsten first discovered the Suitcase Junket!!!). While she was catching up with Ryan, one of his friends walks into the Fiddle. Ryan introduces Kirsten to his friend Sam. Sam and Kirsten exchange small talk and come to find out that Sam is living in Kirsten’s great-grandmother’s childhood house just down the street! Can you even believe it?! Kirsten excitedly explains that she hadn’t been inside the house since she was about ten years old and Sam offers to take Kirsten back to his place so she can see it. Seeing that it was about 10:30pm on a Friday night and this Sam was a complete stranger, she says ‘Yes! But in the daylight.’ So they exchanged numbers and Kirsten went to see the house that Sunday... in the middle of the day. The rest is pretty much history...

The proposal

May 2019

This proposal requires some back story so bear with us while we set the stage... In February, Kirsten was in D.C. at a conference. While on the phone, Sam randomly asks Kirsten ‘Your ring size is a 6, right?’ Kirsten silently giggles and says ‘Yes that should work’ and conversation continues on. The next day, Kirsten was telling her friend Maggie about Sam’s question the day before and Maggie then looked online at the ring that Kirsten had her eye on and exclaimed, ‘THE RING IS SOLD!’ The following Friday, Kirsten drove to Thomas, WV to visit with Sam and when she went into the bedroom to drop off her bag, she saw from standing in the middle of the room, a medium sized FedEx box on the floor, just under Sam’s dresser. This stuck out to Kirsten because Sam never received anything from FedEx before and also, why wouldn’t he just open the box when he got it? Kirsten had a hunch about what was inside... Weeks went by and every time Kirsten came to visit Sam in Thomas, the box was still sitting on the floor, just under Sam’s dresser. The two never discussed this with each other, though Kirsten would send update pictures to a few of her friends saying ‘the box is still here!’ Then, one Friday afternoon Kirsten walked into Sam’s apartment and in the middle of the kitchen on the floor was a shred of FedEx box. Kirsten went to the bedroom to put her bag down, as she always did on a Friday she came to visit and as she peered towards the dresser, she saw that the FedEx box WAS GONE! Dun, dun, dunnnn! The two went down to Tip Top for a delightful burger night dinner and made their way back to Sam’s apartment afterwards. Sam asked if Kirsten wanted ice cream, which of course she said yes, and Sam asked her to scoop. Kirsten opened up the mint chocolate chip ice cream pint and before her eyes was a beautiful, ice cold, golden engagement ring! Kirsten looked over at Sam, he was down on one knee and asked Kirsten to marry him. Which of course, she said yes!
