Great Smoky Mountains National Park is not too far from Sylva, NC. In August, the park will be warm, filled with lush greenery, waterfalls, hikes for all experience levels, and scenic outlooks.
There are many companies in the area that offer river tubing or whitewater rafting experiences.
There are tons of waterfalls in this area. Dry Falls, located a few miles outside of Highlands, is a gorgeous 75ft drop, that gives you the rare treat of walking safely behind the falls. It’s very accessible with a short walk to the falls and has an accessible observation deck. Other special waterfalls (Secret Falls, Cullasaja Falls, Mooney Falls, Glenn Falls, Big Laurel Falls…) can be viewed via short or long hikes.
Sylva and Dillsboro are cute little mountain towns with numerous shops, restaurants and breweries. These two towns are just a few miles apart. Our favorite restaurants in these towns are Lulu’s on Main, Dalaya Thai, Ilda, Lucy in the Rye, and Boots Steakhouse. Innovation and Lazy Hiker breweries are the best. For coffee, White Moon Cafe is great!
