Sam and Kate met on Hinge in December of 2022. Sam responded to a prompt on Kate's profile about her love of bagels at a local Scandinavian-Jewish deli, Bernbaum's. There they had their first date and spent hours getting to know each other. Bernbaum's breakfast became a staple Sunday morning stop until their closure in 2024. Since their closure, Sam and Kate have replaced their slow Sunday morning brunch with coffee, Spam, eggs, and rice cooked together in their home while they listen to vinyl records. Sam and Kate found a common love of food, travel, and quality time with loved ones as a cornerstone of their relationship. Sam had told Kate of his time living in Japan, and within the first month of dating, he told her that he would take her there someday. One year later he followed up on his promise and they traveled to Japan for two weeks. They explored from Tokyo to the southernmost island. Kate planned a trip for her parents to tour Germany and see the Christmas markets in December of that same year. Sam proposed to Kate on their tour of Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof Palace at a small lake outside the Linderhof Palace grounds, a sweet moment together in the quiet of snow-frosted trees.
