It was in 2020, during New Zealand’s first Covid-19 lockdown, when Sabina and Tomáš first connected. Sabina had just returned early from a six-month stay in Germany and was battling jet lag at home. Meanwhile, after rushing back to Wellington from a surf trip in Taranaki, Tomáš found himself bored and restless. With little else to do but stay indoors, the two did what millions around the world were doing during this time of uncertainty—logged on to Tinder. Their first date took place at a local restaurant during the initial easing of Covid restrictions. Tables were spaced apart, and patrons were advised to wear masks when not eating. Despite the somewhat unromantic setting, they hit it off. Sabina and Tomáš met again the very next day and have been inseparable ever since.
