On the second Tuesday of organic chemistry at WSU, I made the conscious, yet bold decision to sit in front of a group of boys I knew to a little loud and rowdy, yet familiar faces in a room full of strangers. As I had dreaded that entire class, we were asked to form groups to work in for an assignment. Guess who was the lucky girl in their group? That’s right, it was me. In that moment, lucky was the last word I’d use to describe how I was feeling, but looking back, lucky is exactly what I was. We finished the assignment, exchanged names, and left the class heading our own ways. A few minutes later I hear, “Hey, Rylie!” being yelled behind me as one of the guys from the group comes running up to me. It was Garrett. (Thanks for pushing him to do that, Bryan). After some awkward small talk, he cracked a joke and a smile, and got a laugh out of me. From that conversation forward, I knew we’d be best friends. Flash forward through the next 8 months of late study nights, a few fights, a lot of laughs, and me turning him down several times, I finally caved and went on a “date”, only to have it be the coldest, and worst first date it could have been. But on that day, something clicked and I knew it was more than just the best friends we had tried to be for so long. What was the worst class we’d ever take, turned out to be best thing that’s ever happened to us. It was organic from the beginning, thanks to organic chemistry.💗
