Travel Note

1. By land

Many guests will be arriving by land via either Boston or New York - please find best practices and recommended routes below: Note: Summer traffic on Cape Cod can be intense. Our wedding is intended to land late in the season to lessen the burden of traffic and crowding on our guests. Traffic peaks in both directions on Saturdays (standard Cape house rentals are Saturday-Saturday) and car travel during these times can be exceedingly unpleasant. Therefore, we must recommend (not only selfishly, because we want to see more of you all) that you plan to arrive before Saturday morning. From Boston (expect ~2 hrs): Leave Boston via I-93 S. At the world's most confusing interchange in South Quincy, take Exit 7 for MA-3 S. Stay on MA-3 S all the way across the Sagamore Bridge. Upon crossing the Cape Cod Canal, MA-3 S becomes US-6 E. US-6 E is the primary Cape corridor road. Continue on US-6 E to Harwich, and take Exit 82 for MA-124 S/Pleasant Lake Ave. Follow MA-124 S (also known as Queen Anne Rd and Old Queen Anne Rd) until you reach Chatham. From New York (expect ~5 hrs): Take US-278 N (also known as the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, or BQE) toward LaGuardia Airport. Take Exit 9E for US-678 N (Bronx-Whitestone Expressway) and continue over the Whitestone Bridge. Take Exit 4A to merge onto I-95 N (towards New Haven) and continue on I-95 N for a very long while. Just before passing through Providence, RI, take Exit 36A to merge onto I-195 E/US-6 E towards East Providence/Cape Cod. At Wareham, take Exit 40A to merge onto MA-25 E toward Cape Cod and, after crossing the Bourne Bridge, take the roundabout's third exit (Sandwich Rd), and when you can see the Sagamore Bridge, turn right onto US-6 E (Mid Cape Connector). Take US-6 E to Exit 82 for MA-124 S/Pleasant Lake Ave. Follow MA-124 S (also known as Queen Anne Rd and Old Queen Anne Rd) until you reach Chatham.

Travel Note

2. By sea

Cape Cod extends into the Atlantic like a flexing arm; by this simile, Chatham is located at the elbow. The Cape curls north from Chatham, with Orleans, Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown concealing Cape Cod Bay from the harsh Atlantic, with the Cape's hand, Provincetown, punching up towards Boston. Ferries run (9:00am - 5:30pm) between Boston and Provincetown. If you are flying into Boston, consider the option to take the ferry to Provincetown and cab from Provincetown to your accommodations. It will not be easier, but it will be much more scenic and you will score points with the locals.

Travel Note

3. By air

Paul Revere didn't have this option, but the advent of air travel and its subsequent proliferation afford you the opportunity to soar above the sweaty, miserable suckers crawling down US-6 E, exercising their horns in agonizing exclamations of futility. Flights to Hyannis (the Cape's triceps, to extend the simile from "2. By Sea") are not prohibitively expensive and, especially for those arriving from New York City airports, quite beautiful. The birds-eye view of the Cape's (and Long Island's) geography is, frankly, stunning. If you can arrange a pickup at the Hyannis airport or a car rental nearby, this is also an arrival option to consider. Again, if you are arriving via NYC, there are flights from LGA (inarguably the United States' finest airport) which are ~35 minutes and very beautiful, your plane never puncturing the clouds or reaching cruising altitude. Just something to think about.
