Like many couples today, we met through a dating app during a COVID instigated “temporary” trip to Kona, HI. What started as “I’m just looking for a buddy to explore Big Island with” turned into several more months of hiking, freediving/spearfishing dates, and lazy beach weekends. Soon Mel would have to return to the mainland for work, but through lots of time zone management, returning to the island as often as possible, and flexibility we were able to still share musubis as much as possible. Fast forward to July 4th weekend, 2022. What was supposed to be a small family gathering to see where Ryan’s family traditionally spent Independence Day, turned into a weekend of (even more) celebration. Ryan took Mel on a beautiful hike, at the base of Grandfather Mountain. He waited until the other families and fellow hikers cleared, when he “got down on one knee” and nervously asked Mel to marry him. The reaction (as most of you can imagine) was a VERY ugly cry with lots of tears and instant regret for the 4th of July inspired nails (perfect for engagement photos)!
All it took was one last minute venue visit to find the perfect venue for Ryan and Mel. In a beautiful shared moment as they looked out across the ocean, Ryan said to a teary-eyed Mel “this is where we’re getting married, right?” and it was quickly agreed that this would be the spot to share with everyone. Not only did Kona Salt Farm give the couple all the feels, but they also do great work.
