How We Met

Ryan and MK met and quickly started dating during MK’s last semester at Kansas State. MK’s roommate, Emily, and Ryan’s roommate, Jake, started dating several months prior - their wedding is this September! MK and Ryan played the role of wingman for a couple dates and became acquainted. The romance didn’t really take off until MK’s car broke down and Ryan came to the rescue. He did his best, but there’s not much you can do for a dead transmission. After his courageous attempt to fix the car, MK bought him Jimmy Johns as a thank you. The way to anyone’s heart is through their stomach, right? They have since been dating for 4 years. MK graduated that May and moved home for work and family. Ryan finished school, then moved to New Orleans, Minnesota, and finally Fort Worth for work.

How Ryan Popped the Question

Let’s start with Ryan telling me he was going on a boys trip to Wichita for a custom car reveal. 100% believable. I (MK) on the other hand, had a girls weekend planned with my sisters and family to watch the Kentucky Derby. We got our nails done, dressed up, made mint julips, and lost small bets (to Aidan of all people). After the Derby, we decided to go out for dinner on the Denton Square. When we arrived, our reservations were going to be an hour delayed. My Uncle Narci, who runs the marketing for the restaurants, offered to take us to the newly finished concept across the square. Sunago Bell is where Hannah’s rehearsal was hosted back when it was in hard hat construction, so we were excited to see it! It is on the 5th story of the Wells Fargo building in Denton. When we got to the top, Hannah shoved me out of the elevator while Erin tried to fix my hair. Katelynn was nervously giggling. All I saw was a man at the end of a line of candles across the room. Keep in mind, Ryan was in Wichita. Just that morning, he had sent me a video of him and Andrew passing the Winstar Casino - a hallmark sign he had crossed state borders. My man was out of state. So I got back in the elevator thinking, “Now’s not a good time, we are crashing somebody else's proposal.” I looked back in the elevator to all of them politely uninviting me to join. So I walked slowly as the cogs started turning that this was all for me. Ryan was across a large empty room, standing on a rug, at the end of a line of candles. There were large illuminated letters, “MK&R” next to him. I didn’t see that earlier. We nervously swayed and talked. Ryan proposed marriage, I accepted, and we danced a little more. He yelled, “EVERYBODY CAN COME OUT, SHE SAID YES” and people flooded in from under the tables, the kitchen, stairwell, bathroom. Ryan had some of our closest friends and family present and ready to celebrate our exciting engagement. It was a dreamy night.
