Ryan and Liza first met at Cal State Northridge in the summer of 2010 when her friend Mark invited her over to the Banzai house, a Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity house that he just moved into. They hit it off right away. A month after meeting and texting each other often, Ryan asked Liza to be his girlfriend. In true Liza fashion, she said no and demanded to be taken on a date first. After a romantic date at Woodranch BBQ & Grill, Ryan asked her again to be his girlfriend. Of course, she said yes and the rest is history!

8 years and 8 months later, Ryan secretly planned the proposal to Liza by getting her to think it was her idea to invite all their friends to meet at Huntington Beach for the AVP Beach Volleyball Tournament. Ryan had it all planned out to happen on the pier over the water. Parents, grandparents, aunts, and cousins were an added bonus for Liza when she found out they were in on the surprise as well. After the proposal, Liza, Ryan, parents, grandparents, and friends from San Diego had dinner reservations at Dukes where bottles of champagne were drank and Liza's food was taken to go because she was too excited to eat. A Cinco De Mayo after party took place in Burbank where friends who couldn't make it to the beach were able to celebrate the couple's engagement.
