Flight

Cancun International Airport

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the closest major airport to Tulum, and you'll find non-stop (or one-stop) flights from most major American (and European) cities on several airlines. Cancun is about 75 miles from Tulum. That's a bit too far to walk, but don't worry, there are plenty of options to get you from there to Tulum. Rent a car! The quickest way to get to Tulum (as well as to keep your options open activity-wise once you get there) is to rent a car. If you are renting a car, be sure you get all of the necessary insurances. Hire a shuttle! There are multiple companies who will provide a private or group shuttle from the airport to your hotel. A round trip shuttle that will fit up to three adults (plus luggage) may cost around $170. Take the bus! This is the cheapest, but the most adventurous. Depending on your timeline, it could also eat up about a half day of travel time. ADO runs multiple buses a day from Cancun (right at the airport) to downtown Tulum.

Rental Car

Information about Rental Cars

Nervous about driving a car in Mexico? Don't be. The road that takes you out of Cancun becomes the main street in downtown Tulum, so you only have to make 2-3 turns to get from the airport to your hotel. Renting a car will also make it a bit easier to get to attractions around Tulum (otherwise, you have to bike or hire taxis). If you do rent a car in Mexico, be sure to your rental includes the extra insurance required by Mexican law.

General Tulum Hotel Information

Unlike Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Tulum does not have all-inclusive resorts (with the exception of Kore Tulum and Dreams Tulum). Most hotels are smaller, boutique hotels with only a few dozen rooms. Please be aware that If you do see an all-inclusive that says it's in Tulum, it's most likely about 30-45 minutes (on the highway) from the actual Tulum. Hotels on the beach in Tulum can be a bit pricey. There are more affordable options in town (which is about 10-15 minutes from the beach) or on the beach with non-ocean views. Tulum also has a healthy stock of Airbnb options. Be sure to check those ratings and make sure you're close to Tulum town or Tulum beach. If you're not booking at one of the hotels we've listed here, we recommend using a third party site (like Expedia or Booking.com) to finding a place on the beach (Zona Hotelera) since all events will be in the hotel zone. Filter for a hotel that has a pool and air-conditioning. Not all hotels have these amenities.
