December 2018, Ryan and Jillian took solo trips traveling halfway across the world, only to run into each other at a shared hostel in Porto, Portugal. They realized they were from opposite sides of the Sierra Nevada mountain range and that they got along surprisingly well. They spent a day and a half together in Porto eating Portuguese cuisine, sampling port wine on the Duoro river, running from security guards, and playing cribbage. Their time was short, but they both knew that there was something more. Their romantic interest in each other was not realized until after they parted ways, Jillian heading back to Spain and Ryan heading to Morocco to meet up with his brother. Ryan and Jillian talked, texted, or FaceTimed pretty much every day thereafter. Ryan (drunk from both the in-flight alcohol and the anticipation of seeing Jillian again) bought his ticket to San Francisco on his flight back home from Morocco. They made multiple trips back and forth from San Francisco, where Jillian lived, to Houston, where Ryan lived, over the first year of their long distance relationship. September 2019, when Ryan was looking to make a move with work, the two decided to move to Southern California together, where they currently reside. They lived in Long Beach for a year, and in October 2020 moved to Monrovia, where their world turned upside down. Within the same week Ryan was notified that the engagement ring he had made for Jillian was ready to pick up, the couple found out they are expecting their first child! They are looking forward to celebrating their big day with family and friends and cannot wait for June 2021 when they get to meet Baby Hogan.
